MACRA

Marquette Crew attended MACRA on April 26. The day dawned bright and sunny; however, races were delayed until mid-afternoon, as the wind conditions resulted in heavy chop in the race course. After pushing the races back several hours, all the crews finally were able to start racing. The race officials started off with the varsity eights, as they were seen to be the most able to deal with the adverse conditions. As the races went by with little problems, eventually all the eights and fours were able to compete, varsity and novice.

The varsity women raced both an 8+ and a 4+. The 8+ was the first Marquette crew to go out, and ultimately came in third in their heat, with an overall time of 7:38.0. The 4+ placed 4th in their heat with an 8:19.9, a very successful send off for senior Nettie Egel. The varsity men raced a 4+, in which they placed 5th in heat (7:59.1). The novice teams had some very successful races, with a boat from each team continuing onto the grand finals. The novice women had both a 4+ and an 8+ go out. The 4+ grabbed 5th in their heat, completing the course with a 9:06.7. The women’s novice 8+ swept out the competition, taking home a trophy for the team. In the grand finals, they finished 1st overall with a time of 8:00.4, just over 25 seconds in front of the 2nd place boat. The novice men also had a 4+ and a 8+ race. The 8+ placed 4th in their heat, with a time of 7:15.4. The NM 4+ placed second in their heat for their first race (7:16.0), allowing them to continue onto the grand finals, in which they finished 5th overall (7:43.3).  All our crews had a great first spring race experience, and are now eagerly awaiting and training for the culmination of all their hard work at Dad Vails.

Milwaukee Invite 2014

This April, the Marquette Crew Men squared off against cross-town rivals, the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) in the annual Milwaukee Invite. Both teams competed in a series of events taking place over a 1250m course along the Milwaukee River in this traditional challenge. This year, Marquette boated a Varsity Men's 4+, a Novice Men's 8+, a Novice Men's 4+, and a Mixed 8+. Notable finishes from Marquette include a win in the Novice Men's 4+ event, who edged out MSOE by 2.7 seconds. This Novice 4+ was rowed by Adam Kobiela, Evan Hile, Ricky Kaufman, Matteo Brocato, and coxed by Ale Tomasino-Perez. It was a productive day of racing from both teams and squads, and a great way to kick-off the spring regatta season! Full results from the event can be found here.

CIRC

On Saturday, February 22nd, Marquette Crew traveled to Chicago State University, in Chicago, IL, to attend the 16th annual Chicago Indoor Rowing Championships. We were joined by many other teams, including Purdue, the University of Illinois, University of Chicago, University of Iowa, Michigan State University and DePaul University, among others. All four of our squads had a great showing, with many rowers claiming personal records in their 2k races. Along with the collegiate and novice races, our team also competed in the 1000 meter coxswain race, along with the men’s and women’s open challenge relay (2500m, 5 rowers).

The team had several top ten overall finishes, especially among the novice. The novice women had two rowers in the top ten; Jessica Dreyer who came in 5th place (7:43.4) and Emily Riesgraf in 7th at a 7:53.5. For the novice men, Ricky Kaufmann secured a sixth place finish with a 6:41.8. Under the lightweight event, Rebecca L’Hote finished in 7th place for the varsity women (8:13.1). The coxswains for both the varsity teams also placed well. Steven Burns for the varsity men had a 4th place finish for the Coxswain 1000m race, and Christine Grossman grabbed 3rd place. The final event for the team was the 2500 meter relay, in which both the men and the women had two teams enter, mixed varsity and novice. The women’s A team finished 5th with a time of 7:08.5, and the women’s B team close behind in 7th (7:12.9). Finally, the men’s A team secured a 9th place finish, completing the race in 6:02.6.
