Tail of the Fox Regatta 2015

This past Sunday, the team went on the road for the Tail of the Fox Regatta in De Pere, WI. The team departed Milwaukee on Saturday night, and spent the evening on St. Norbert’s campus. As Sunday began, we gathered at our trailer that former Coach and alumni Ryan Endries '06 was grateful enough to drive up to DePere for us. We quickly unloaded our boats and began racing the 3500 meter course. The weather led to an interesting race day with 10-12 mph winds coming from the north causing a strong head wind and leading to some choppy water. It was also cloudy and the temperature hung around the mid-50s all day.

Despite the weather Marquette crew had a great day of racing with six of our teams medaling. The Varsity Women's Lightweight 4+ placed 1st in the Open Women 4+ event, with a time of 16:40.6. Not to be outdone by the lighties, the Varsity Open Women’s 4+ came in a close 2nd with a time of 17:11.9. The Varsity Women also did well in the 8+ with the 1V finishing a solid 5th place with the time of 15:16.3. The Varsity Men also had a good showing Sunday, with their Men’s Open 4+ placing 2nd to MSOE in their heat and posting an impressive time of 14:07.1. The Varsity Men’s Lightweight 4+ also had a solid race placing 2nd in their race as well. Concluding the Varsity races we had the Men’s 8+ which raced a solid race and managed to pass a boat on their way to putting up a time of 13:25.9 and a 4th place finish.

This is also the first time our novice got to compete under the Marquette colors. The Novice Women put up good times with their 1F taking 1st with a time of 16:51.8 in the Novice Women 98+ event, and their 2F taking 3rd with a time of 19:32.7. As for the Novice Men, they too got the ability to row a 4+, where they placed second in their race with a time of 18:07.6.

Great job to all the rowers and thanks to the parents who took their weekend to come out, feed us, and watch us row. We hope to see everyone at the Head of the Rock this upcoming weekend in Rockford, IL!

The Milwaukee River Challenge 2015

Our varsity teams started off the 2015 season with a good showing at the Milwaukee River Challenge. This regatta takes place on the team's home rivers, the Milwaukee River and the Menomonee River. This was also the team's debut race, since the move to the new location, and purchasing the team's own equipment. There was stiff competition for both teams as the Varsity and Alumni boats raced against NCAA programs such as UW-Madison and our cross town competition, the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Other club teams were present as well, including Purdue University and Northwestern University to name a few.

Our Lightweight Women’s Varsity 4+ placed in the top fifty percent of their race with an impressive time of 20:41.87. The women also did well in the Open 8+ with a top fifty percent finish and a time of 19:27.62. The men’s team did very well, and also posted a top 10 finish in the 4+ even for the first time in seven years with a time of 18:30.41. The team also had very good showings from both the Men's Alumni 8+ and Women's Alumni 8+, which represented a number of classes from 2000 to 2015. The Men’s 8+ posted a time of 17:35.39 and the Women’s 8+ rowed a 20:39.60. Great job to all current rowers and alumni! Next the team heads off to De Pere, Wisconsin for the Tail of the Fox!

ACRA National Championship

The team ended the 2015 Spring season by competing for the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) Championship. The championship regatta took place on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Georgia, home of the 1996 Olympics. This season celebrated the first time Marquette has ever sent sweep or women’s boats to ACRA, the National Championship regatta for club rowing. In some of the most thrilling racing of the year, Marquette Crew represented themselves and the university in a big way.

After battling through tough heats and repechages, the Novice Women’s 4+ took 3rd in the Petite Final.

Despite missing qualification for the grand final by 2.2 seconds, the Varsity Women’s 4+ took the Petite final by storm, winning by open water and posting the 5th fastest overall time out of all the Varsity Women’s 4+ finals – proving they belong in the elite.

The Novice Women’s 8+ won their repechage and became the first Marquette boat to have ever advanced to a Grand Final at ACRA, where they placed 7th Nationally.

Strong results from all three boats proved Marquette’s speed, and placed the women’s team 12th overall in the country. It was a gorgeous holiday weekend, and we were lucky to have many parents and supporters who made the trip to join us in Gainesville, along with watching the races live online.

After taking only 2 athletes down to ACRA last year, sending 19 women this year was a testament to the growth of the program. ACRA was an incredible way to end the season, and we look forward to having even more presence at the National Championship regatta in years to come.
